Cracking joints for the benefit of mankind?
Jonathan Brack, local York chiropractor discusses treatment techniques.
‘Do you crack people?’ I often get asked. And the answer is yes; if it’s appropriate and as long as it is likely to be beneficial to that patient.
what is the crack?
The crack is called ‘spinal manipulative therapy’ or sometimes an ‘adjustment’. The noise comes from a joint that is being stretched quickly. This is beneficial if that joint is restricted and/or painful and this treatment technique can help to restore good function and movement, as well as reducing pain.
A chiropractor may certainly do more than one adjustment on you, but they can be a fairly vigorous treatment method, so it is often done along side some soft tissue work or vibration massage for example to relax the area first.
York chiropractor discusses treatment techniques
There are many other types of manipulation chiropractors can do, alongside or instead of adjustments, and sometimes these may be preferential for whatever reason. For instance an adjustment of the spine of an elderly person with osteoporosis (reduced bone density and strength), would not necessarily be the first thing I would consider, and it is always important to take the individuals specific case into consideration. However, we do treat many elderly with good results, tailoring the treatment techniques specifically not only to the complaint but also to what is best for that specific patient.
Today Henry is demonstrating a neck (cervical spine) adjustment/manipulation. This is of the cracky variety!
Although a powerful effective treatment tool, the crack is not always necessary, depending on the problem and of course the patient.
Anxiety about seeing a chiropractor
Some patients just don’t like the crack! Whether it’s anxiety or just a sincere dislike of it. But there are always other options and if you prefer not to have a certain technique, we will endeavour to find what works for you physically and emotionally.
The picture after the video shows Matt demonstrating the activator, sometimes an alternative to an adjustment. This is a little tool designed to deliver a highly reproducible, low amplitude, high velocity impact into the desired area to move spinal segments in order to alleviate restriction (it gives a little push out the end 😂).
These are just two examples of many techniques that we use as chiropractors.
