We get certain questions regularly in daily clinical life. We thought we could answer some of the common ones here and hopefully help with some of your queries. Today we discuss pain

York Chiropractors Jonathan Brack, Matt Pisarski and Henry Atkinson discuss pain and what they as chiropractors can do about it.

Today we discuss Pain😖

As you can imagine this is a huge topic, so today we will have a brief delve into spinal pain, although chiropractors treat many mechanical ailments in many parts of the body.

What is causing my pain?

The spine and surrounding anatomy is complex, and spinal pain can be caused by various structures in the back, including joints, muscles, nerves and discs, or a combination of the aforementioned.

There are many factors to consider, from damage to these structures, to external impacts like poor posture or repetitive strain, all the way to psychosocial influences such as anxiety and stress.

Very rarely will your pain be caused by a single influence, severe pain due to a joint issue in the spine can also trigger fear and worry, which in turn can increase the pain symptoms as the sufferer is often left feeling ‘out of control’, and worrying for the future.

What can you do for me?

After an appropriate history and examination, we will give you a diagnosis explaining what we think the problem is, and a prognosis explaining how well we expect you to do, and how long we expect it to take. Then we create you a treatment plan to address those underlying causes.

Will it help?

No two patients are the same, pain and progress can be varied depending on the diagnosis, severity of damage, and chronicity (how long the problem has been there). We will give you an expected outcome on your first visit, when we tell you your prognosis.

As we guide our patients through their treatment plan, and pain reduces, we can see their confidence grow, and their movement and flexibility improve.

If we think you need further investigations, such as an MRI scan or x-ray we can refer you for these.

Ultimately our aim is to listen to you, and understand how we can help you with your pain.

If you’re not sure then give us a call, our chiropractors are always happy to have a chat about your case on the phone, and give some advice as to whether chiropractic could benefit you or not.
