Continuing Treatment

If we have started you on a treatment plan after your first visit, this will usually involve coming back to the clinic for treatment for a period.

The frequency of your visits and how long this is expected to last for will be discussed with you on your first visit so you know what to expect.

We design treatment plans based on what we think is most likely to work best for you and your complaint. The plan will vary depending on who you are and the nature of your problem.

Why ongoing care matters

Most of the things we do as chiropractors are non-invasive (except acupuncture), hands on techniques. These can be effective for many mechanical issues, however it is important to understand that we usually need you to come back for further treatment, not only so we can monitor your response, but also so we can try to reinforce positive gains by repeating and building on previous visits.

Typically, chronic (longer standing) issues tend to require longer treatment plans with more treatment sessions, whereas acute (more recent) issues tend to need comparatively less treatment. You will be constantly monitored and assessed during any treatment plan. Typically, as you improve, we look to lessen the frequency of treatments gradually, aiming to give you continued improvement whilst aiming to minimise dependency on us.

Designing your personalised plan

No two people heal the same way. That’s why we develop a tailored plan based on your goals, lifestyle, and response to treatment. Early on, the plan may include frequent visits to address acute issues. As you progress, the program will typically space out to fewer visits per month.

We continuously reassess your plan at key milestones. If you’ve achieved significant pain reduction and improved mobility, we’ll celebrate that success and refine your care aiming to maintain those gains. Should new challenges arise—like a marathon training cycle or a change in workstation setup—we’ll adjust your plan to match.

What to expect in follow-up visits

Each follow-up visit begins with your chiropractor checking how you’re doing. We’ll ask about any changes in your symptoms, daily stressors, or new activities that might affect your complaint. This ensures our approach adapts to your evolving needs.

Your chiropractor will perform treatments, focusing on areas that still need attention. Depending on your complaint, you may also receive manipulations, mobilisations, or supportive modalities such as vibration massage or trigger point therapy. As you hopefully improve, we aim to move from corrective care to preventive maintenance, if appropriate.

Your role in care: home exercises & lifestyle

Chiropractic treatments are only one piece of the puzzle. Between visits, you can support your progress through simple exercises and ergonomic tweaks:

  • Daily stretches tailored to your complaint
  • Posture checks while sitting or standing
  • Strengthening drills for core stability
  • Hydration, good sleep habits, and stress-management practices

These actions aim to empower you to take control of your recovery. We’ll provide clear instructions to make at-home routines easy to follow.

Unplanned hurdles

Although it is important to have a diagnosis, a treatment plan, and a prognosis, these are initially based on what we find on your first visit. Sometimes during a treatment plan, your symptoms may change or start to look different. At Acomb Chiropractic Clinic, we know that patients do not always respond as expected. We monitor your progress closely; if necessary, we may change treatment techniques, alter treatment frequency or even stop treatment if we feel it is not beneficial or unlikely to help you further.

Maintenance

Some people, particularly those with chronic long-term problems, can find it beneficial to return every now and then for what we call a ‘maintenance treatment’. This is a very individual thing; it depends on a variety of factors including the response of your symptoms to our treatment.

Deciding whether maintenance treatment is appropriate and the subsequent frequency of these visits, will depend on the patient, the complaint, and the reaction and overall benefit from our treatment.

If we feel that a maintenance visit could be beneficial for you and you would like to try it for yourself, then we will discuss this with you and design a suitable treatment program accordingly.
